“Patience”

We live on a planet of expediency, a world where convenience is the order of the day. With situations like same-day delivery as well as instant downloads within our reach, Homo sapiens have adopted the notion of events happening swiftly and without difficulty. We are faced with the burden of getting things done at high speed, efficiently that we do not even have the time to rest in between task accomplishment. Due to this, patience which is a key ingredient in our daily activity is not available to us when confronted with difficulties or hitches.

The word “DHRITI” is a Sanskrit word for patience which means to tolerate or persevere. Repeatedly, when we search for the meaning of this word in the dictionary, we stare at words like tolerance, forbearance, just to mention a few.

From a global perspective, situations together with the environment we live in have forced us to learn where and when to practice tolerance. We are concerned with not just what we want to achieve in a limited time, but also fashioning out the right environment for those things to manifest as you would expect at their own appropriate time.

When people practice patience, they feel liberated from the over-attachment to the outcome of whatsoever they attempt. It is imperative to know that the yogic ideology demonstrates that coming loose from the outcome through patience will bring about peace of the mind.

Without a doubt, Yoga helps individuals to understand that they cannot be liberated from certain circumstances, but can learn to live with these with modesty as well as poise. The kind of patience nurtured on the mat is one full of perception & clarity. We initiate the necessary move of opening up and preparing our body when we envisage a particular pose or position as our target or goal. We passionately enjoy the course of expansion in the heart, mind and also the body as we practice.

Furthermore, Yoga helps individuals to practice, cultivate as well as understand the necessities of the art of patience. Yoga helps to get rid of that anxiety by providing us with the cure to impatience. Yoga crafts a sense of centeredness in the midst of the chaos experienced by offering a feeling of compassion as well as balance towards oneself.

It is imperative to understand that Yoga is not a ‘quick fix method’. It takes devotion of several hours of consistent practice as well as patience which have been developed over a period of time while attempting and refining poses or positions. We must learn to embrace continuous attempt rather than seeking for immediate result. It is the essence of trial that heals us. Practicing patience can be likened with practicing unconditional self-love.

 

Below are some practical tips on how to develop patience:

·      Best place to start the development is your Yoga mat. It is imperative to understand that transitions are as vital as the postures themselves. Stay connected with your breath as well as your body during transitions.

·      Do not fidget when in the postures. If there is a need to do this, let your whole awareness be involved in the movement.

·      Be conscious of where your eye gaze is fixed. Keep your eye gaze steady as well as deliberate.

 

Patience has bestowed on us the gift of time & experience. And when we realize this, we start to see patience as more than just a virtue, but a blessing.
